Reflections on American Democracy:
A Discussion with Frank Fukuyama and Norman Ornstein

Tuesday, January 19, 2021, at 11 a.m. EST

Images of a mob storming the US Capitol jarred Americans across the nation on January 6, leaving behind profound concerns about our leadership and our country. Distrust and recriminations abound—for violence, incitement, and the spread of misinformation—and the backlash has included the introduction of an Article of Impeachment. Meanwhile, the nation is gearing up for President-Elect Joe Biden’s inauguration and a massive transition of strategies, leaders, and staff across the legislative and executive branches of the federal government.

In the face of such upheaval, the Volcker Alliance will convene a discussion with two revered political scientists, Francis Fukuyama and Norman J. Ornstein, to reflect on this moment in our history and what it may mean for the future of elections, our democracy, and our civil service. The discussion will be moderated by Emily Bolton, the Volcker Alliance’s chief strategy officer, and the audience will be encouraged to ask questions.
