MUNICIPAL WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT EFFORT IN GEORGIA JOINS THE VOLCKER ALLIANCE’S GOVERNMENT-TO-UNIVERSITY (G2U) NETWORK

Led by the Georgia Municipal Association and Georgia City Solutions, GMA’s “Jobs with Purpose” initiative will be the sixth member of the Volcker Alliance’s national network of governments and universities

NEW YORK, NY (June 28, 2021) – Today, the Volcker Alliance announced that it is expanding its signature Government-to-University (G2U) Initiative to a municipal workforce development effort in Georgia, led by the Georgia Municipal Association (GMA) and Georgia City Solutions (GCS). This effort will join five other sites—Chicago, Kansas City, Los Angeles, North Carolina, and Pittsburgh—that are engaged with the G2U Initiative, an innovative approach to addressing critical governance challenges by building regional networks of governments and universities.

In June, GMA and GCS launched a multi-year initiative, “Jobs with Purpose: Municipal Workforce Development Initiative.” Supported by staff from the Carl Vinson Institute of Government at the University of Georgia, this initiative brings together city leaders and representatives of the Technical College System of Georgia, University System of Georgia, and the Georgia Department of Education in a collaborative effort to assess the workforce needs of Georgia’s cities and develop plans to address them. As these leaders work together, they will be able to tap into G2U resources around the country for guidance and innovative practices.

“We are very pleased to welcome the ‘Jobs with Purpose’ effort to the Volcker Alliance’s growing group of G2U networks,” said Thomas W. Ross, Volcker Alliance president. “The G2U movement is driving important progress in our collective efforts to strengthen the public sector workforce. We are excited to support and learn from Georgia’s innovative city leaders.”

GMA represents all 537 cities across the state of Georgia and provides leadership, tools, and services that assist municipal governments in becoming more innovative, effective, and responsive. GCS is a nonprofit created by GMA to establish and support innovative programs, solutions, and research aimed at building vibrant, economically prosperous, and well-managed cities and improving the quality of life of municipal residents in Georgia.

“As we continue to refine our understanding of Georgia’s municipal workforce needs, this partnership with the Volcker Alliance could not come at a better time,” said Larry Hanson, GMA executive director. “We look forward to joining the national G2U network and to connecting with colleagues around the country who share our commitment to securing the future of our public sector workforce.”

“Georgia City Solutions (GCS) is pleased to partner with GMA and the Volcker Alliance to work collectively with thought leaders in the G2U network to pursue solutions and initiatives to develop a sustainable municipal workforce pipeline for Georgia cities,” said GCS board chair, Kirby Thompson.
