For more than seven years, the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation has invested in the Safety and Justice Challenge (SJC), which seeks to reduce over-incarceration by changing the way America thinks about and uses jails. This national effort is working to reimagine and rebuild local criminal justice systems by reducing jail incarceration and eliminating racial disparities. As the initiative pivots from driving transformative change to investing in sustainability strategies, the issues of talent and leadership are rising to the fore.

People are at the core of meaningful sustainability strategies. To ensure that diverse, talented leaders serve as stewards of the criminal justice system, the Volcker Alliance is developing a range of actionable strategies to identify gaps, barriers, and opportunities for diverse leadership in the public administration of criminal justice.
