Paul A. Volcker, the founder of the Volcker Alliance, recognized the singular capacity of Schools of Public Service to strengthen the public sector workforce and help solve the great issues of our time. The Public Service Education Accelerator (PSE Accelerator), an initiative launched by the Volcker Alliance in 2020, operates under this same belief and is dedicated to developing and implementing innovative strategies to amplify the reach and impact of public service education.

As part of its interest in promoting collaboration between research and practice, the Volcker Alliance partnered with leading schools of public policy and administration to understand how the community balances consideration of faculty research, teaching, and service.

Key Competencies for Public Procurement

In 2016, the Volcker Alliance examined the state of the public workforce responsible for $2 trillion in procurement spending each year. The Alliance proposed a model of the essential skills and competencies required for public procurement that could be applicable at all levels of government. The Alliance then engaged with procurement officials and thought leaders, public affairs scholars, vendors, and other government leaders to collect their impressions of the workforce’s current proficiency in each critical capacity.
