Next Generation Service Partnership

NextGen Service seeks to create an American democracy strengthened by broad participation in public service, diverse leadership, and constructive collaboration by inspiring and preparing college students to serve their communities and Nation as well as drive change.

The Next Generation Service Partnership (NextGen Service) is a national initiative led by the Arizona State University Watts College of Public Service and Community Solutions and the Volcker Alliance. NextGen Service seeks to create an American democracy strengthened by broad participation in public service, diverse leadership, and constructive collaboration by inspiring and preparing college students to serve their communities and Nation as well as drive change. NextGen Service builds on the desire of young people across the country, many of whom are socially and politically aware and engaged in the civic sector, to have a meaningful impact throughout their careers.

Approach

Through NextGen Service, Schools of Public Service are designing and implementing new credential programs for undergraduates focused on public sector problem-solving and cross-sector collaboration. Inspired by the pioneering Public Service Academy (PSA) at ASU Watts College, NextGen Service programs:

  • Engage students in a multi-year curriculum;
  • Recruit students from all disciplines and majors;
  • Prioritize public service values and community engagement;
  • Integrate experiential learning through internships and mission-focused projects;
  • Leverage community assets and respond to local needs;
  • Offer structured opportunities to collaborate with fellow students outside the classroom; and
  • Award a credential upon completion.

Active Planning Cohort

Five universities are currently working to establish NextGen Service programs on their campuses with students enrolled beginning in fall 2021. The Volcker Alliance and ASU Watts College provide these schools access to a range of services and support to inform and accelerate their planning and implementation efforts, including seed funding, technical assistance, project management, and structured opportunities to share progress and lessons learned.

The first Active Planning Cohort, which began work in July 2020, includes:

Information Sharing Network

The NextGen Service Information Sharing Network is open to any representative from a School of Public Service who is interested in expanding undergraduate public service education. Network members will be invited to participate in a series of structured webinars and interactive sessions to share information about ASU’s Public Service Academy model and other promising approaches to undergraduate public service education. Webinar topics will be announced in advance so attendees can select which webinars are most relevant to their school context. Materials will be circulated to inform participant consideration of possible models and engagement strategies. Information Sharing Network activities will be virtual.

Archived videos and other materials from the NextGen Service Information Sharing Network can be found here.

The imperative of effective public leadership has never been so clear. NextGen Service is strengthening public service education at colleges and universities and inspiring future public servants to take the reins and make change. NextGen Service aims to stand-up programs in every state by 2030 while also cultivating a national alumni network to facilitate ongoing connection and partnership among future leaders.
